【エクステンション留学 アプライ方法】Personal Statement Essayの書き方
前回の記事ではエクステンション留学のアプライする際に必要となる資料を紹介しました。
学校によっては必要書類に200字以上の志望動機のEssayが必要となります。そこで僕が実際に書いたEssayを基に書き方のポイントを紹介したいと思います。
まず下記が実際に僕が書いたEssayです。
Personal Statement by Name
① I am writing to explain my background and the purpose in applying for Business Management Program at UCSD Extension.
② There are two reasons to apply for the program. First, my ultimate career objective is to have my own business. To achieve this goal, I am planning to gain all necessary business skills in the program. Second, I am greatly attracted to the opportunity of having for Optional Practical Training. I am planning to expand my business worldwide and it would be vital for me to gain work experience outside of Japan.
③ I majored in commerce with the emphasis on marketing strategy planning at University’s Name. After graduating in 2013, I worked in Company’s Name Co., Ltd., an IT start-up company, for over two years. There I was in charge of web marketing strategy planning. In particular, I engaged in increasing the page views on our company websites through Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. I measured the impact of the strategies using analytical tools such as Google analytics to follow PDCA cycle. In result, I was able to boost the website visitors from 10,000 views to 300,000 views in 6 months.
④ In 2015, I studied English at a school in Davao, the Philippines for three months. I learned reading, listening, speaking, and writing in a balanced manner. I have confidence that I can discuss business topics with classmates, give presentation, and write essays at the Business Program.
⑤ I am very excited about the opportunity to study at UCSD Extension. Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to your favorable reply.

お題は志望動機のEssayですが、バックグラウンドもあると志望動機に説得力をより持たすことができるのでPersonal Statement要素もあると良いでしょう。また、字数ですが多すぎるのはあまりよくありません。最初書いた時400字以上になって、それを添削してもらったら長いと言われました。結局削って削って275字に抑えました。
それでは段落毎のポイントです。
①導入
これから何について書くかを簡単に紹介しましょう。長さは1センテンスで大丈夫です。むしろ長すぎるとクドいと感じられてしまいます。
②志望動機
お題は志望動機なので最初はバックグランドではなく志望動機を書きましょう。日本のエッセイだとバックグラウンドの後から志望動機を書く方が時系列になっていて良いとされるかもしれませんが、英語のEssayは一番言いたいことを最初に持ってくることが一般的です。
③バックグラウンド
バックグランドは目一杯アピールしていきましょう。ただ上手くまとめることが重要です。最初僕はアピールしすぎて結構この部分が長くなってしまいました。
④英語できますよアピール
これは決して必要ではないとは思いますが、自分はこのプログラムに着いていけるアピールをしました。エクステンションは語学留学ではないので、それなりに初めから授業に着いていけることが重要視されます。
⑤締め
結論では簡単に今まで書いたことをまとめるのが一般的ですが、僕は「プログラムに参加することを楽しみにしてる」で締めました。短い文章で内容を繰り返すのはクドいと感じられるので、これくらいの締めが程よいと思います。
